At approximately 2:30 pm on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, a breach was discovered at the five-day upset pond of the Summerhouse Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by ONWASA. Immediate remediation efforts and sampling were initiated by ONWASA.
It was determined due to complications associated with recent construction at the plant; an estimated 210,548 gallons of untreated wastewater was released with 201,600 gallons reaching Lake Caroline located in the Summerhouse Community of Holly Ridge NC.
The discharge has been reported to the State of North Carolina Division of Water Quality. ONWASA will follow all State requirements regarding cleanup, sampling, and notifications.
