Customers Encouraged to Protect Plumbing as Freezing Temperatures Continue And Winter Weather Possible This Weekend

Freezing temperatures have already impacted the area this week, and forecasts indicate a possibility of a winter weather event this weekend. The Onslow Water and Sewer Authority (ONWASA) is encouraging customers to take steps now to protect their plumbing from freezing and potential damage while crews continue preparing the water and sewer system for continued cold weather.

Prolonged periods of freezing temperatures increase the risk of frozen or burst pipes, which can lead to costly repairs and service interruptions.

ONWASA encourages customers to take the following precautions:

• Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls

• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and protect exterior faucets

• Seal air leaks around doors, windows, and foundations

• Allow indoor faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold to keep water moving.

• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate, ensuring hazardous materials are secured and kept out of reach of children and  pets

• Locate your main water shutoff valve in case a pipe freezes or bursts

ONWASA Preparations:

ONWASA crews are closely monitoring weather conditions, protecting critical infrastructure, preparing backup power systems, and ensuring staff and resources are ready to safely respond when needed.
