The iron is naturally occurring throughout the ONWASA system, and when it is combined with chlorine, the iron is precipitated out and settled to the bottom of the pipe. Recent pressure changes and operational and flow changes have caused the iron to be stirred up. This mineral is now in the water entering into some homes and businesses.
Although not aesthetically pleasing, the water is safe to drink, to prepare food with and to bathe. We would caution you against washing white laundry if you notice that your water is discolored.
If you notice the discolored water in your home or business, it should dissipate in a day or two. If it persists for more than two or three days, please call our office and we will send a technician to evaluate it. Please call Karen Wallace, Water Quality Compliance officer, at 910 937-7520 for more assistance if the brown or yellow water persists in your home for more than two or three days.
