The Onslow Water and Sewer Authority confirms
that there is no danger of Cape Fear River chemical contamination in
ONWASA’s drinking water. Annually,
ONWASA produces over 2.8 billion gallons of pure water and serves over 140,000
customers. Unlike other regional water systems that draw
raw water from surface sources such as rivers or reservoirs, ONWASA utilizes
deep, ancient underground aquifers for its water supply. The deep aquifers have not been subjected to
any known chemical contamination.
ONWASA is not interconnected with the Cape
Fear Public Utilities System, nor can chemicals from the Cape Fear River
migrate into ONWASA’s water supply.
In addition to using a secure source of raw
water, ONWASA uses both conventional treatment methods and a state-of-the-art
reverse osmosis plant, which serves the southern area of Onslow County. ONWASA follows strict regulations in the
treatment and delivery of water to customers, performing more than 47,000 lab tests
annually to ensure that water is pure and safe.
Each year ONWASA publishes a Consumer
Confidence Report which is a comprehensive annual water quality report. This
report is part of ONWASA’s ongoing commitment to public transparency and
provides customers with detailed information on the composition of ONWASA’s
water.
